I am so excited to be able to share these with my readers! I LOVE Lightroom. It speeds up my workflow and gives me more time with my family. One of the best things about it- presets. If you make the same adjustments on most of your RAW files, you can turn that in to a preset and apply it with a touch of a button. I use two presets that I created, Hadley and June, on 90% of my images. Now you can use them too- just download them here!

I would love to see what you do with them- so please leave a comment or link back if you post an image that you used them for!

I am honored to be featured on the Get Totally Rad! Blog this week. Check it out for my personal tricks on getting any kid to look at the camera and smile!

Andrea Roberts Photography Get Tottaly Rad Actions Blog Feature

So about a month ago, I found myself up late at night with nothing to do, so naturally, I headed over to Twitter to find other people suffering from insomnia still awake. I happened to see a tweet from Totally Rad Actions asking people to submit their best stripper names for a chance to Beta test a new texturing program called Dirty Pictures. The late night creative juices were flowing, and the perfect name popped in to my head: Roxie Glitterhips. Well, at least I thought it was perfect. And, turns out Chenin Boutwell liked it too, and I was one of the lucky winners.

Enough back story- let’s get to the good part. First, I can’t even tell you how cool it was to get to Beta test this. I know you other photographers can relate to my school-girlish euphoria, because not only was I CC’d on a email by Jessica Claire, but the man genius himself, Doug Boutwell, called me personally to walk me through the program. (And I somehow managed to start talking to him about my kid’s diapers. Who does that?!)

Anyway, the program is AWESOME! I have honestly never been too in to textures before because I found them a little time consuming. I would try one, and then think, but maybe another would look better. So, back to the drawing board. But with Dirty Pictures, you can preview what the entire set of textures will look like on your image, tweek the opacity, and change the blending mode all with a click. And did I mention it automatically adjusts itself to the size and orientation of your image? Sa-weet!

The textures themselves are incredibly versatile, and lend themselves to a variety of different images, from newborns to weddings. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Check out the before and after’s below from talented friends across the country. (Mouse over for the before version.)

This texture is called Booty LaRue, and I love the way it enhances this image from Susan Berman of Whimsical Photo & Design in Olympia, WA.

Johnny Thunderpants is the perfect compliment to this image from Nicole Fields, a fabulous lifestyle photographer in Sacramento, CA.

Lola Lovespell gives a hazy, sunny feel to this image by Spokane, WA based photographer Jaidean Baker.

Mercedes Diamond gives a vintage feel to this stunning maternity image by Washington D.C. based photographer Kelly Moffat Saeed of KelPhoto.

This image by Birmingham, Alabama based photographer Stephanie Fisher is enhanced with Dixie Mimosa.

And in contrast, the not so subtle use of Bubba Wildcat on Boston based Helen Makadia’s photo.

before & after

Another example of subtle use, I love the warm glow Johnny Thunderpants adds to this image by Rhode Island photographer Amy Rogalski of Amy Ro Photography.

before & after

Keri Doolittle is a fab Phoenix, AZ based wedding photographer, and her image gets some added impact from Cinnamon Windsor.

before & after

Connecticut based photographer Crista Acosta’s image gets a little boost from Destiny Starr.

before & after

Here is an example of how Destiny Starr can look on an indoor image. I love the way it looks on this image from Pittsburgh, PA based Seedling’s Photography.

before & after

Check out Ginger Savannah on Baltimore based Ashley Layfield’s image!

before & after

Booty LaRue isn’t just for adults, I love the way it looks on this darling image from Portland, OR based photographer Laura Renee.

before & after

I am loving the way Maxi Mercer looks on this fab maternity image from Boise, ID based Diana Palmer of Yan Photo.

before & after

And of course, my personal favorite, Roxie Glitterhips adds just a little something to this image by award-winning Austin based photographer Lyndsay Stradtner of Life in Motion Photography. This image is extra special because it is of the gorgeous Brandi Head, who made this post possible with her amazing coding skills. Thanks again, Brandi!

before & after

I am just wondering about the speed of this plugin – how fast/slow is it if you are applying hi-res textures to a hi-res image to generate several previews? Was speed ever an issue when you tested it? Thanks for the review.

andrea (6 comments.) posted the following on September 24, 2009 at 11:02 am.

Sara- it is super-fast! I just timed it, and it took under 30 seconds to generate the previews on a 12mb image.

So glad this review was helpful to so many!

A little over a year ago I had the privilege of attending the Secret Workshop held by the lovely Cheryl Muhr in Phoenix, AZ. I met so many amazing photographers there, including the one and only Leah Simmers.

Even photographers can get stumped when it comes to dressing their own families, so I of course offered to help Leah out when she mentioned she had no idea what to dress her fam in for their upcoming session. I mean, who wouldn’t want to pick clothes for her 3 adorable boys?

Leah, I hope you love these- I think the outfits are perfect for your fabulously fun family!

Leah’s outfit and shoes, the boys’ outfits, and the jeans for her husband are all from Boden USA. The other shoes are all found at Piperlime and her husband’s shirt is from Gap.

Chelsey posted the following on June 24, 2009 at 12:49 pm.

LOVE!

Leah Simmers posted the following on June 24, 2009 at 5:34 pm.

You rock! I love it all so much! It's funny, I can dress another family but my own, ugh, stumped. THanks so much you're the best!

I missed last week’s “What to Wear Wednesday” because I was busy celebrating my baby boy’s Chasing Fireflies, and is a great way to celebrate the milestone that is turning 3!

Outfit number two is from Mini Boden, and would be especially handsome on a little guy with blue eyes.

Outfit number three is my personal fave- I love the playful shirt by Sandbox Rebel found at Little Boy Chic. The jeans remind me a little bit of James Dean, and you can get them from J. Crew’s kids line- Crew Cuts.

You probably notice that none of these outfits are overly stuffy, and they all look like you could run and jump and play in them. I find that kids photograph best when they are comfortable, but as you can see- you can still have plenty of style!

Cindy posted the following on June 3, 2009 at 6:19 pm.

Love this!

Great style doesn’t have to break the bank. This weeks outfit selections all come from a store that not only has great value- but an awesome selection- Target! (Links coming soon!) If you know me- you know I am sort of addicted to good old Tar-jay. But with stuff like this, can you blame me?!

So you have your family photography session scheduled. It is a given that the kids will look adorable, but what should you wear to get maximum impact from your portraits? The mere thought of having to coordinate more that 1 outfit might have you running for the white shirts and khakis (Stop! Don’t do it!), but I am here to help. Each Wednesday I will put together a fabulous ensemble for a family, child or maternity session, and even tell you where you can get them for yourself! Bonus- be the first to purchase the outfits for your family and tell me about it, and you win a free session and a free 8 x 10 print!

Without further ado, here is this weeks look. Bright, fresh and fun- perfect for a playful family session!

Mom’s outfit can be found at Boden (sweater, jeans, shirt, shoes.)The adorable dress can be found at Hanna Andersson. Baby’s outfit is from mini Boden. You can get Dad’s rocking jeans at Gap, and his polo at Land’s End.
