Evan has a small obsession with my phone.  He knows how to call someone, and loves to call the grandparents or Chris and tell them about his day. He usually starts off with a good “Soooo, how was your day?” and will usually throw at least one of the following questions in as well:

  • “So, what did you dream about?”
  • “So, what are you going to do today?”
  • “So, what is Grandpa/Uncle Josh/the dog doing today?”

Today as I was trying to pack for our quick trip to Iowa City, he grabbed the phone and talked to Grandma Nancy for a good 20 minutes. I love the he is so social. Let’s just hope he doesn’t figure out how to dial China. Or 911….

A quick note to clients, I will have limited internet access until Monday.

that is too funny that he always starts it with “so”. and what an adorable photo you got! have fun in iowa city.

It is hard to believe that summer is coming to a close.  If you are like me, you have been doing your back-to-school shopping, filling out last minute paperwork for school and trying to squeeze in a few more trips to the pool before the chill that has been greeting us in the mornings sticks around all day. Truth be told- I love the fall. I love the crisp air, the football games, the changing leaves and hearty fall meals. Fall is also when I do all of my sessions for Holiday cards.

If you have been meaning to schedule a session to get that perfect image for your holiday card, now is the time! My deadline for all holiday orders is November 20, and my September and October calander is filling up fast! Be sure to book soon to take advantage of this great deal. As an added bonus- if you and a friend get together and book your sessions back-to-back at the same location, you will both recieve 3 awesome mini-albums that will make perfect gifts for grandparents.

When Jennifer contacted me about bringing her dogs along for their family photo session I could barely contain my excitement. Having two dogs of my own, I know that pets are a huge part of the family. Whether it is greeting us with a slobbery kiss when we get home, laying on our laps as we watch TV, or playing fetch with what is hopefully not an irreplaceable shoe- our four-legged friends bring joy to our lives and give us unconditional love and companionship. It is so important to document their special place in our hearts and homes.

IMG_9704-Edit

And, if the cute dogs weren’t enough- isn’t Miss Hailey gorgeous?

IMG_9693-Edit

I love her expression here. I know that this is the face that Jennifer will think of when her little girl is all grown up. Hailey will be walking up on stage to get her high school diploma, and she will think back to this moment with a bow in her hair and a grin on her face and wonder how her baby grew up so fast.

IMG_9732-bw

Jennifer, thank you for letting me capture your beautiful family! I hope you will always look back on these and be taken back to the laughter and warm sunshine and wet doggie kisses!

Holy cow Andrea! You are quite a busy girl! No wonder you need a mommy’s helper. Somehow I wasn’t getting the correct feed, so I hadn’t seen the new posts. I think maybe I messed up during the switch to the new blog. I’m hooked in now:) I’m proud of you girl! You need to post the photos we did for “The LAM” – you know…our singing group…remember our creative shots of our shadows? I think my mom still has them…

IMG_9616-Edit

Anyone with a toddler will tell you that these are the moments you treasure. Those quiet times with your kids, snuggled in bed with your pajamas on, reading a book. The calm before the storm. The rare, still peaceful moments when the constant blur of preschool exuberance is stilled by words on the page. The covers always seem extra warm, and even with the sun peeking through, it is tempting to stay there all day.

IMG_9607-Edit

But of course you can’t. Your wild things will eventually want to get up. And then, if you are lucky, they might slow down just long enough to give you that look. You know, that one that melts your heart? The one that looks a lot like this:

gwen1

But, they are wild things after all, so then they will be up and running again. And laughing and giggling, and tickling. I love the look on Gwen’s face here.  I just adore that look of pride in her smile. Because- hey- you made them, and they are pretty amazing! It is a look that says- this right here is the good stuff. This right here is what I want to remember.

Can I get a drum-roll please?  Thank you to all 128 entrants in the Jeni’s Ice Cream birthday giveaway. I am so excited that I get to send my favorite treat to the lucky winner…..

DSC_0332-Edit-2

I know, I know- that is just me and my kids eating ice cream at Jeni’s and looking cute (at least the kids are!) I had to share because Wes was SO adorable eating his cone of Belgian  Milk Chocolate. He got more on his face than in his mouth, but trust me- he enjoyed the heck out if it! And I believe Evan had Cherry Lambic- he is a connoisseur I tell you. Actually, his favorite flavor is Black Coffee, but the last thing a 3 year old needs is cofee!  I’ll quit torturing you showing off and get back to announcing the winner….

Thank you to all who entered! If you are local- may I suggest doing your next family photo session at Jeni’s? Not only are their stores gorgeous-but I have yet to meet a kid who doesn’t smile while eating ice cream!  Erin, I’ll be contacting you so we can get your Signature 9 on its way!

One of my favorite parts of a session actually happens before the big day. A few days prior, I come over to your house, and we discuss wardrobe, location and what you are looking for in your session. I LOVE getting to know my clients- that connection makes it so I can capture the truest portrait of you. Your essence. What makes your family you.

When I met with Anna’s mom, after I finished raiding Anna’s closet (which would make even Carrie Bradshaw jealous) we sat in the kitchen and discussed the exuberant, willful and often exhausting stage that is age 3.  Then she looked at me and said, “You know what, Andrea- it’s like that country song says- You’re going to miss this.”  And she is right. For every tantrum, or mess or hour of lost sleep- there are a million moments that we wish could last forever.

Like the way she snuggles up and gives you a kiss.

sandrablog

Or the wonder in her eyes as she swings without a care in the world.

IMG_9197-Edit

Or the way you twirl and twirl and twirl until you feel a little sick to your stomach but you are laughing too hard to notice.

annatwirling

And this. You will definitely miss this. That hug so tight you can’t tell if you are losing your breath because of the squeeze or because your heart is just so full.

IMG_9178-Edit

Sandra, thank you for letting me peek into your world. I hope someday you will look back on these pictures and smile and know that even if you can’t have it back- at least you will remember it forever.

Stay tuned later this week for part 2- where Anna has a tea-party and plays super-hero!

And, don’t forget there are still a few days left to win some Jeni’s Ice cream! Enter here!

Okay, I’ll give you a minute to wipe the drool from your chin.

There, all better? Good! Today is my 27th birthday, and to celebrate, I am giving one lucky blog reader the gift of Columbus’ very best ice cream. If you follow me on Twitter, or Facebook, you know that I practically live at Jeni’s I love it so much. Not only is it delicious, but it is locally owned and operated and they use organic, local ingrediants to hand-craft their ice cream. Sound delish?

All you have to do to enter is visit Jeni’s website, then leave a comment below telling me if you would pick the Signature 9 or the Seasonal 9 if you win! Tweet or post a link on Facebook or your blog, and you get an extra entry- just comment another time and let me know (scout’s honor!).

Happy birthday – a bit late! :) My brother-in-law lives in Columbus and every time we’re there I want to go to Jeni’s and I looove their logo! Yummy!

Meet Ella. She is just what little girl’s are made of, if you ask me.

A princess with a bit of spunk and a whole lot of personality- she was cracking me and her parents up the whole session.

I think she might be a bit of a Daddy’s girl, what do you think?

Look at those eyes!

Oh, yes- definitely a Daddy’s girl!

I met Ella and her family just before sunset at Heritage Park in Westerville. The sun was golden and magical, and Ella’s laughter filled the air. As we wandered around the property, a wedding party came out to the porch of the barn, and I couldn’t help but think that someday that would be Ella in the beautiful white dress. Don’t blink- isn’t that what they say? And it is so true. That is why I love to capture families just how they are. It is so important to document this time, so that one day, before your daughter walks down the aisle, you can pull out that picture of her playing peek-a-boo through the trees and savor it once again. Because she will always be your little girl, she just won’t always be this little.

Julie, you have a beautiful family- Thank you for allowing me to capture you!

Amy (3 comments.) posted the following on August 31, 2009 at 8:04 am.

These are stunning! There is something I just LOVE about the first one. So innocent and sweet and childlike – just perfect. And the second, what great interaction you caught! I love getting moments like that!

Okay- admit it- you are totally smiling right now, right? I mean, look at that little grin!

I love to capture families just as they are. First thing in the morning, pajamas on, in the bed snuggling wrestling. It doesn’t get much better than that. Years from now, these are the times you are going to want to remember the most. The moments with all the giggles and smiles and boundless energy.

Of course, it is always a plus if you clean up nicely and we can get a picture of your gorgeous family outside too.  And this family cleaned up nicely!

I love boys being boys! Aren’t they handsome? I think Katy’s phone is going to be ringing off the hook when they hit the teenage years.

What a beautiful family. Love the bed shots. So fun!

So about a month ago, I found myself up late at night with nothing to do, so naturally, I headed over to Twitter to find other people suffering from insomnia still awake. I happened to see a tweet from Totally Rad Actions asking people to submit their best stripper names for a chance to Beta test a new texturing program called Dirty Pictures. The late night creative juices were flowing, and the perfect name popped in to my head: Roxie Glitterhips. Well, at least I thought it was perfect. And, turns out Chenin Boutwell liked it too, and I was one of the lucky winners.

Enough back story- let’s get to the good part. First, I can’t even tell you how cool it was to get to Beta test this. I know you other photographers can relate to my school-girlish euphoria, because not only was I CC’d on a email by Jessica Claire, but the man genius himself, Doug Boutwell, called me personally to walk me through the program. (And I somehow managed to start talking to him about my kid’s diapers. Who does that?!)

Anyway, the program is AWESOME! I have honestly never been too in to textures before because I found them a little time consuming. I would try one, and then think, but maybe another would look better. So, back to the drawing board. But with Dirty Pictures, you can preview what the entire set of textures will look like on your image, tweek the opacity, and change the blending mode all with a click. And did I mention it automatically adjusts itself to the size and orientation of your image? Sa-weet!

The textures themselves are incredibly versatile, and lend themselves to a variety of different images, from newborns to weddings. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Check out the before and after’s below from talented friends across the country. (Mouse over for the before version.)

This texture is called Booty LaRue, and I love the way it enhances this image from Susan Berman of Whimsical Photo & Design in Olympia, WA.

before & after

Johnny Thunderpants is the perfect compliment to this image from Nicole Fields, a fabulous lifestyle photographer in Sacramento, CA.

before & after

This image from Bernadette Uzcategui, an awesome Philadelphia based photographer, looks great with Gemini Dolce added to it.

before & after

I love the dreamy, sort of water-color feel that Foxy Laurinda gives to this image by Ashley Turner, a Columbia, MO based wedding photographer. (And am I the only one who thinks the bride looks like Evangeline Lilly? Gorgeous!)

before & after

Lola Lovespell gives a hazy, sunny feel to this image by Spokane, WA based photographer Jaidean Baker.

before & after

Mercedes Diamond gives a vintage feel to this stunning maternity image by Washington D.C. based photographer Kelly Moffat Saeed of KelPhoto.

before & after

Here, Lola Lovespell give subtle depth to this image by San Deigo Lifestyle Photographer Brianne Brose.

before & after

Ginger Savannah looks perfect on this bright and colorful image from Cincinnati, OH based photographer Jessica Wright.

before & after

Doesn’t Starla Fontaine look yummy on this image from Boston, MA based photographer Kristina Young?

before & after

This is Sapphire Velvet on this super fun image from Philadelphia based photographer April Ziegler

before & after

This image by Birmingham, Alabama based photographer Stephanie Fisher is enhanced with Dixie Mimosa.

before & after

Check out the subtlety of Montana Sunfire on this portrait by Southern California photographer Rachel Rhien Tucker of Rachel Clare Photography.

before & after

And in contrast, the not so subtle use of Bubba Wildcat on Boston based Helen Makadia’s photo.

before & after

Another example of subtle use, I love the warm glow Johnny Thunderpants adds to this image by Rhode Island photographer Amy Rogalski of Amy Ro Photography.

before & after

Keri Doolittle is a fab Phoenix, AZ based wedding photographer, and her image gets some added impact from Cinnamon Windsor.

before & after

Connecticut based photographer Crista Acosta’s image gets a little boost from Destiny Starr.

before & after

Here is an example of how Destiny Starr can look on an indoor image. I love the way it looks on this image from Pittsburgh, PA based Seedling’s Photography.

before & after

Check out Ginger Savannah on Baltimore based Ashley Layfield’s image!

before & after

Booty LaRue isn’t just for adults, I love the way it looks on this darling image from Portland, OR based photographer Laura Renee.

before & after

I am loving the way Maxi Mercer looks on this fab maternity image from Boise, ID based Diana Palmer of Yan Photo.

before & after

And of course, my personal favorite, Roxie Glitterhips adds just a little something to this image by award-winning Austin based photographer Lyndsay Stradtner of Life in Motion Photography. This image is extra special because it is of the gorgeous Brandi Head, who made this post possible with her amazing coding skills. Thanks again, Brandi!

before & after

Like what you see? Of course you do! I am telling you- this is going to be THE texturing program to have. You can even add your own favorites to the library. It will be worth every penny of it’s $149 pricetag, and you can sign up here with Totally Rad to find out when it is released to the public. I am just wondering about the speed of this plugin – how fast/slow is it if you are applying hi-res textures to a hi-res image to generate several previews? Was speed ever an issue when you tested it? Thanks for the review.

andrea (6 comments.) posted the following on September 24, 2009 at 11:02 am.

Sara- it is super-fast! I just timed it, and it took under 30 seconds to generate the previews on a 12mb image.

So glad this review was helpful to so many!
